Socializing and Building a Concept of Self
From infancy to pre-k, daycare classrooms provide incredible opportunities for children to connect with others, experiences they might not otherwise have before starting Kindergarten. Participating in group activities allows children to begin learning important social skills such as awareness of others, communication, and turn taking. As children get older, they will also begin to:
- Develop positive relationships with their caregivers
- Learn to cooperate with peers
- Recognize their personal likes and dislikes
- Identify their own feelings
- Communicate those feelings with others
Daily Structure and Care Routines
Children thrive on routine. In a quality daycare, each day follows a consistent plan. Depending on your program, the schedule may vary slightly, but some core elements remain the same:
- Nutritious meals
- Engaging play
- Intentional learning experiences
- Time for physical activity
Throughout the day, children move through activities and regular care routines that help them develop independence. They will practice skills like handwashing, toileting, putting their belongings away, feeding themselves and cleaning up after, and transitioning from active play to quiet time or naps.
As your child becomes familiar with their routine, they will begin to anticipate what comes next. This predictability gives them a sense of security, builds confidence, and allows them to feel safe, comfortable, and supported in their environment.
Play and Learning
Have you ever walked into a daycare classroom? Don’t panic. A classroom is only ever fully tidy after all the kids go home! Clean? Absolutely. Safe? Of course! But it should also be filled with an abundance of age-appropriate toys and materials that bring children joy while at the same time, supporting the development of essential skills.
Sometimes this can look a little chaotic from time to time. Just remember, play and experimentation are natural ways children learn about the world around them. As they explore their classroom and engage in meaningful learning moments, they build important skills through hands-on experiences, without even realizing they are learning. Then, when playtime is over, we pick up the mess together!
As you pull into the pick-up line or walk down the hall to your child’s classroom, we hope this gives you a better sense of what happens behind those doors. Every day your child spends in a quality daycare, you will likely see them become increasingly comfortable with new experiences, showing curiosity about the world around them, and reaching new developmental milestones, as they unknowingly practice these skills regularly alongside their classmates.
